DA
Dallas County Medical Society celebrates National Doctors’ Day to recognize
the service and dedication of its members in promoting a healthy community.
The first Doctors’ Day observance was March 30, 1933, in Windor, Ga., when a physician’s wife decided to set
aside a day to honor physicians. The first observance included mailing greeting cards to physicians and placing
flowers on gravew of deceased physicians. The red carnation is used as the symbolic flower for National Doctor’s
Day.
On March 30, 1958, the US House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. in
1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors’ Day, and President
H.W. Bush signed the resolution designating March 30, 1991, as “National Doctors’ Day.”
